Picking the Right Terrarium for Your Reptile

Is your pet’s terrarium suitable?

A reptile is one of the few pets that needs a specialized environment to live in. You can’t just bring one home without knowing the type of reptile you have or the living conditions that need to be met in order for it to survive. At the Pet Shop, we can help you give your special scaly friend the home they deserve. Here are a few factors to consider before you decide to pick up your brand-new pet and its terrarium.

How Big Is Your Terrarium?

The size of your terrarium matters for many reasons. The first is the size of your pet. For obvious reasons, you’ll need a space that is big enough from your reptile to fit in. The second factor to consider is their behavior. Research is important before you buy any pet. You have to be able to ask yourself the following questions:

  • Are you planning on bringing home multiple reptiles?
  • Do they work well with others?
  • Does your reptile like to move around or stay still?

The answers to these questions will influence your choice. You’ll be surprised to know that most larger reptiles don’t require a lot of space to move around in. However, others are more territorial and will want their own space within the terrarium. In this case, you will have to find a way to arrange the contents of your terrarium for multiple reptiles.

Placing your Pet’s Living Space Within Your Home

Terrariums come in all shapes and sizes. Most reptiles will be able to function in an all-purpose terrarium. These living spaces are usually twice as long as their width and height.

In rare instances, you may decide to bring home a lizard that requires a space that is different from the norm. Reptiles that are used to living in high places, like trees or walls, will need a tall terrarium. This will give them a home that feels familiar.

As you are looking at terrariums, think about where you are going to place it within your home. Make sure you have a safe and secure spot for it. That way your pet is comfortable for a long time.

Reptiles Require Proper Ventilation

Reptiles need fresh air. Unfortunately, pet reptiles live in an enclosed space, which normally doesn’t receive proper ventilation. You can change that with the right covering and side-wall ventilation.

A roof covering must have a large wire screen, with the right size and weight. This allows a flow of air from the top of the terrarium. A side-wall ventilation should have the same kind of wire screen mesh. It is usually placed in the bottom corner of the terrarium.

There are two things you should avoid with a roof covering. The first is to avoid a wire mesh that will allow food to escape. The second is to make sure that the roof is not made of plastic, which can fall apart under intense heat.

The Best Aquarium Decorations to Buy

Aquarium decorations add some life to your pet’s home.

The most important part of owning a fish is providing them with a space to live in. An aquarium is not just some fish tank, it’s a home. For the well-being of your new aquatic friend, give them a place that they will enjoy. Make their aquarium space an area where they can swim freely, surrounded by the things that make them happy. The best way to do this is with aquarium decorations.

As a pet owner, there is a certain joy in decorating your pet’s living space. You are adding your own little touch to their aquarium, from where everything goes to the items you decided to buy. Furthermore, it’s a little sad to see your pet swimming in nothing but four glass walls and water. The more thought that you put into setting up your pet’s fish tank the way, the more they will appreciate the love and attention they are receiving.

Aquarium Decorations

There are plenty of aquarium decorations out there in the world but which ones are the best? What items are almost guaranteed to keep your pet satisfied? To help you answers these questions, here a few decorative items we feel should be in every aquarium:

  • Decorative Rocks – You have to remember that fish are of the sea. They love to be reminded of home, and decorative rocks are a great way to do that. These rocks are made from non-toxic materials, both safe for salt and freshwater pets. This also means that they will not upset the delicate balance of the aquarium’s ecosystem.
  • Driftwood – Driftwood is a great addition to your pet’s aquarium. They come in several different shapes and sizes, making it great for pet’s who like to move around a lot. This decoration is made with multiple cavities, allowing your fish to swim in and out of it at their leisure. Also, just like the decorative rocks, they provide a natural looking environment. It is truly a delight to see them move around and hide out in these wood-like decorations.
  • Artificial Plants – If you are sensing a theme, it’s that your aquarium should be a small replica of the ocean. The rocks and driftwood are a part of making it feel more familiar. Another great decoration to add is an artificial plant. These decorations replicate the look of the plant life you would find in the sea, in all its bright colors and shapes. They also provide a remarkable and realistic-looking aquascape for your pet fish.
  • Ornaments – The decorations are more for you than your pet. They are great for adding your own unique touch to the aquarium. You can add lifelike castle, shrines, or even a tiny sunken ship to your fish’s tank. These are all safe and do not fade over time. As an added bonus, your aquatic friend will love exploring these intricate structures.
